Are you mentally ill?

When you hear that sentence what comes to mind? Did you know that The British Medical Association report 20% of children/teenagers experience a mental health problem at some point? In the majority of cases these problems remain undetected until adulthood and lead to > under achievement at school > drug abuse > violence > disease.

How can we detect at an early stage? Teachers are not trained to deal with mental health and surveys show that they would not be confident to so either. The government are looking at plans to add mental health training to teacher training, don’t teachers have enough to do with already? This could end up in children’s education being compensated for the minority.

I feel there should be mental health experts at school and let the teachers do what they are there to do, teach!

Do you know how your child is doing at school?

Do you ask your childs teacher questions regarding their development?
Do we put too much trust in our teachers?

I see teachers tell parents he/she is doing really well, and parents are over the moon but the child could be doing well compared to a previous poor standard or maybe the teacher has a low expectation level for your child. It may sound silly but you may want to ask are ‘To which level is my child performing at?”, “Is that progress or regress?”. Then monitor the situation and converse with your child so they acknowledge the interest.

Hobbies, whatever happened to those?

Children do what their parents choose or they do not do anything. Why would they have passion or desire for something they do not like? I put 100% into all MY goals and achieved all of them so, that leaves me with the question……are parents subconsciously holding back their kids?

Hobbies follow you throughout life and more often than not they are positive and productive. Many parents regret not taking up hobbies so they push their child to do the hobbies they missed out on rather than their child’s choice.

Should teachers call on Super heroes to help solve the mysteries of literacy?

Comic heroes could deliver a knock out blow to the boys who shun books. New educational research has concluded boys are lagging behind girls, comics have ‘untapped potential’ when it comes to addressing the gender gap.
I feel that increased access to comics in the classroom can act as a “gateway” to other genres and help children translate spoken English into written word.

Graduate tax! To hit doctors and teachers the worst

Just when you thought we were taxed out a new one comes along. Ministers have proposed a tax on graduates to fund university courses, which would see the highest earning professionals paying the most back.

We are soon going to be entering into a new year, another year geared towards SATs. After 4bn and 13 years of trying to improve the structure stats have shown a decline in results.
